Oncology

Oncology patients pose a unique challenge that VeinViewer can help overcome.

Cancer patients are often fighting a long-term battle that requires multiple infusions and takes a great toll on the condition of their vessels. Vascular access site options may be very limited and difficult to locate.

The Challenge of Vascular Access for Oncology Patient:

  • Advanced disease states and multiple treatments may have deteriorated the vessels, providing less overall options and making them more prone to these vessels collapsing or subject to infiltration or extravasation during treatment.
  • Patient often have a long term port for IV therapy, but it should not be used for blood draws.
  • White cell levels can warrant removal of a port in favor of a peripheral IV to avoid higher risk of infection.
  • Multiple rounds of imaging procedures (i.e.  CT scan, PET-CT scan) expose patients to injections of contrast agents, often under higher pressure via “power injection”, increasing risk of the same fragile vessels.
  • Intravenous medications may be caustic and potentially dangerous should a vein blow.

VeinViewer® can help the clinician find the optimal venipuncture site to avoid multiple sticks and preserve the condition of the veins by:

  • viewing veins up to 10mm deep not readily located through traditional methods of sight and touch.
  • locating valves and bifurcations.
  • helping determine patency after IV placement by visualizing the flushing of IV fluids.
  • helping detect a hematoma from an accidental puncture as it forms.
  • helping avoid an extravasation or infiltration by visualizing hemoglobin escaping into surrounding tissue.
