The NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and its conductor Frank Strobel, received a standing ovation at the O2 World Hamburg for after they had thrilled around 5,500 spectators by playing Don Davis' score, synched to the science fiction movie, "The Matrix". The movie itself was projected by two high brightness 4K DLP Cinema® projectors from the Christie® Solaria™ Series.
The concept of "film with orchestra" is the great speciality of Frank Strobel, who – together with Beate Warkentien – founded the EUROPEAN FILM PHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE in Berlin 13 years ago. Since then, under his artistic direction, it has been continuously researching original music and new recordings, as well as restored film copies.
Most recently, Strobel conducted the NDR Radio Philharmonic in "Matrix Live" at the Hamburg O2 World, a project on which the conductor and musicians had worked for the last 18 months. It featured playing Don Davis' score live and synched to the "Matrix" movie.
They were joined in the preparation and execution by BIG cinema's team which – on behalf of the European Film Philharmonic Institute – was responsible for the entire installation of cinema technology, which ranged from playback devices through projectors to the screen.
Johannes Bernstein's team had been working on the details for around a year before the event could be staged.
"We have already carried out several events of this nature but not of this magnitude, and rebuilding the O2 World in order to stage it was a particular challenge. We wanted to really play it safe and were once again able to rely on the performance and quality of Christie projectors," said Johannes Bernstein, CEO of BIG cinema GmbH.
Bernstein opted to use two Christie CP4230s, whose powerful light output was ideal for projecting bright and powerful images onto the 23 metre wide and 10 metre high screen. The screen size was oriented to the stage upon which the orchestra was placed. "The second projector was used for increased light output on the one hand, and for back-up on the other. In the event of one breaking down, we would still have had the second to continue the performance," said Bernstein, explaining the use of two projectors.
The Christie CP4230 4K DLP Cinema® projectors from the Solaria Series have a light output of 32,000 lumens each, and in combination with the performance of the 85-piece orchestra – who brought the best out of what composer Don Davis and Frank Strobel drew from the Matrix sound track – provided a very special cinema and sound experience.
The projectors were placed around 80 metres from the screen on a Bütec pedestal, which had been specially equipped with a soundproof cabin from Audipack, so that no matter how faint the fan noise, it could not disturb the orchestral music.
Onsite, the three-man team from BIG cinema worked in sync with the sound team from Neumann & Müller as sound and video were run on separate systems: an aspect which proved to be the biggest challenge of the event for Bernstein. "The interaction of the technicians needed to be seamless, and ultimately everything worked out great."
According to Bernstein, the video team had "real fun" with the Christie projectors which operated without problems during onsite assembly, setup and during the performance. "Both the client and the audience were thrilled by the brilliance and luminous intensity of the images at the O2 World. We therefore plan to use Christie projectors again and again for future events."
