29th Kinotavr: Continuing the Tradition of Christie Technologies

SOCHI, Russia - (June 19, 2018) - Sochi has once again hosted the Kinotavr Open Russian Film Festival, which was held this year June 2 to 10. For the 15th year running, all festival equipment was provided by Kinoproekt, using Christie® visual and audio technologies.

"We came back to Sochi, and again used proven solutions for high-quality movie theatres, all Christie equipment. That means Solaria DLP® Cinema projectors and Vive Audio," says Alexander Rubin, CEO of Kinoproekt.

This year, this innovative sound equipment was even better than before. To create just the right sound field, three suspended sound-absorbing surfaces were added to the Vive Audio LA5 linear array speakers. They were designed, built, and, after acoustic measurements, hung at specific locations in the auditorium at specific angles at a specially calibrated height. "This allowed us to significantly improve the orientation of the sound system and uniform coverage in the auditorium. Our task as the Festival's technical partner was to ensure that sound reproduction is up to grade, and the acoustics of this site make that a complex task," explained Alexander.

Preparations began early with the Kinoproekt team carrying out practical experiments and conducting measurements directly on the site. The result was an acoustic model of the Winter Theatre hall. Then it was time for practical experiments. "We began improving the intelligibility of speech in the hall. Today, all the off-screen broadband channels are suspended in a special way with additional vertical and horizontal correction angles. This is our technical solution to the specific features of the room," explained Alexander. "The new model was tested here a week before the Festival’s opening ceremonies."

All the 2018 movies, a total of 65 in all programs, including short films, were shown using equipment from Christie, a company whose innovations for almost 90 years in cinema have earned trust and proven their reliability in thousands of theatres around the world, as well as at major international film festivals, including the most recent Cannes Film Festival and the upcoming Shanghai International Film Festival. The Christie CP2220 Digital Cinema Projector was installed in the Sochi Winter Theatre to broadcast the competition, and the CP2230 series was used for the regular evening showings at Theatre Square.

"Here in Sochi, at Russia's most important film festival, where the movies are presented by the filmmakers themselves, the screening quality is fundamentally important for the country's cinematic community. We must not let anything get in the way. I believe that, working with Christie, we’ve been successful," said Alexander.

The opening and closing ceremonies of Kinotavr have been using Christie projection equipment for many years. The BSS team is responsible for this part of the visual design of the festival. This year they used six 3DLP Christie Roadster S+20K projectors.

Christie Vive Audio employs a unique linear array design and ribbon driver technology, combined with powerful, high-performance Class D amplifiers, the first of their kind to be used in a cinema sound system. This Vive Audio setup has enabled the optimum sound perception zone to be increased by around four times compared with traditional sound systems based on compression drivers. As a result, it is possible to provide uniform sound quality throughout the entire auditorium. Since going on the market, Christie Vive Audio systems have been installed in more than 1000 auditoriums. Visit www.viveaudio.ru.
