GYEONGJU, KOREA – (Sep 16, 2011) – Christie®, a global leader in innovative visual projection solutions for education, business and entertainment, is pleased to announce that eight Christie CP2230 projectors have been installed for a 3D multimedia show at the Gyeongju World Culture Expo.
The Gyeongju Tower Multimedia Show is an outdoor projection featuring the tower’s facade as the centerpiece of the show, accompanied by laser shows, music, videos and fireworks. Lasting 20 minutes, the projection, which takes place every day after sunset, shows stunning 3D images of optical art unfurl and mutate into colorful bursts of varying shapes and sizes, transforming these images into a fascinating cinematic experience for the audience.
Designed to resemble the famous nine-story wooden Hwangnyong pagoda, the Gyeongju Tower is 82 meters high, with a width and depth of 34.6 meters and 35 meters respectively.
“Given the uneven façade of the Gyeongju Tower, one of the major challenges we faced was to ensure that we are able to present a high-quality, high brightness and consistent display of the different images we are projecting,” said Lee Joon-Ho, president of Eugenetek Corporation, one of Christie’s partners in Korea.
“We positioned the eight projectors on the ground encircling the four inner walls of the Gyeongju Tower. Two were placed at a distance of 37 meters on each side and the other six were triple stacked and positioned 97 meters away on both sides,” Lee continued. “The projection aims upward, enveloping the entire Gyeongju Tower. The Gyeongju Tower outdoor projection show is possibly the most advanced multimedia show using digital cinema projectors in Korea.”
The multimedia show, “Moon-lit Night of Silla,” tells the story of an imaginary Queen Seondeok’s fight to protect Silla against the evil King Baengnyong, or White Dragon, and culminates in a grand finale that has the Gyeongju Tower vanish. Made possible through the application of 3D optical effects, it is the first time this visual technique is being utilized in Korea.
According to Henry Khang, general manager of Christie Korea, “The visual effect of the show is amazing. I was very impressed that the show’s designers and art directors were able to recreate the needed realism to transform the show into a larger-than-life audio-visual adventure for the audience.”
Established in 1998, the Gyeogju World Culture Expo has grown into a major international festival celebrating culture in Korea’s Gyeongsangbuk-do province. With 44 countries participating in this year’s Expo under the theme "The Story of Millennium ― Love, Light and Nature," the sixth Gyeongju World Culture Expo ends October 10.
