SHANGHAI – (June 25, 2013) – The 16th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) ended on a high note on June 23, 2013, with Christie®, a global leader in digital cinema projection, as the exclusive digital projection partner for the fifth consecutive year.
The 16th SIFF was held June 15 – 23, 2013. The festival opened in style with the screening of “Monsters University” in Chinese using the world’s first superior 4K DLP Cinema® projector, the Christie Solaria® Series CP4230. Directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae, “Monsters University” is the prequel to the original film Monsters, Inc. The story relays the friendship between the one-eyed green orb Mike and the fluffy blue giant Sulley on a college campus. The movie opened in the US on June 21.
Besides deploying a Christie CP4230 for its opening film screening, SIFF’s designated cinemas such as Yong Hua Cineplex, Shanghai Cineplex and Da Guang Ming Cineplex also featured the festival’s movie line-up using Christie’s Solaria series of 2K and 4K digital cinema projectors.
"The Disney/Pixar 3D animated movie of ‘Monster University’ is the first animated feature chosen to open the SlFF. It is also the first 3D opener,” revealed Min Zhang, marketing director, Shanghai International Film Festival Pte Ltd. “Besides breaking away from our tradition of screening a feature movie for the opening of the festival, this move also marks a key milestone in the Shanghai and China movie industry at large. We hope to show the world our commitment to push the envelope of creativity through advanced technology such as 3D technology is inseparable from the entire movie creation process from the planning to shooting, editing and the final delivery onto the screen. An impressive movie deserves the best delivery system to touch the audience. We are glad to have Christie as our exclusive digital projection partner to complete the creative process for the past five years. And we certainly look forward to more fruitful years of collaboration with world leaders such as Christie.”
Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific, said, "Shanghai is the cradle of Chinese film art. It’s here that many dreams become reality on the silver screen. As the indicator of China’s movie industry, Shanghai International Film Festival gathers the best film professionals around the world for this annual event. Christie, as a world leader in digital cinema projectors, is honored to be associated with the festival. This is especially so this year as the opening film chosen was a 3D animated feature. As the brightness and resolution of movie display becomes more demanding, Christie Solaria digital cinema projectors rise to the call of delivering brilliant 3D images with our 4K DLP® solution.”
