In the early days of large venue projectors, the best light source available at the time was xenon. Back then, even the largest projectors weren’t very bright, and therefore the colours were washed out, so the gamut was very limited. Today’s xenon projector technology is exponentially brighter, and the gamut is much larger. But even with a xenon source, the best it can do is DCI P3. The deeply-saturated primary colours that can be produced by laser sources, on the other hand, lends the technology well to expanding the colour gamut when they are used as a light source in a projector.

Enter the Griffyn

In 2020, Christie Digital launched the Griffyn 4K32-RGB laser projector. It has a sealed class IV laser engine (although the projector is classified as a class I or Risk Group 3 according to IEC 62471-5:2015 based on the output of the projector) light source that, according to the specs, exceeds DCI P3 and achieves more than 96% of the Rec. 2020 colour space. Not even a white light phosphor laser projector can match that spec. The manufacturer says that it is the only 30,000lm “pure RGB” projector on the market.
