'Numina' Art Installation Scoops Digital Art Award

October 11, 2017

Wokingham, UK. – Christie is delighted to announce that Zarah Hussain's Numina sculpture has won the 2017 Lumen Prize People's Choice Award. The eye-catching installation – which was powered by two Christie HS Series projectors and driven by Christie Pandoras Box – mapped animated geometric patterns onto a sculpture composed of tessellating pyramids arranged on a hexagonal grid. The sculpture was commissioned by The Barbican and installed in its foyer, with Christie providing projection for the installation as part of its long-term partnership with the cultural centre.

Artist Zarah Hussain's focus lies at the intersection of science and spirituality, combining contemporary digital art with traditional hand-drawn Islamic geometry. She was thrilled with the opportunity to work at the Barbican and make use of the Christie technology, which allowed her to express her ideas on a previously unprecedented scale. "The capacity and capability of the projections surpassed my expectations, because even in daylight the animation was lit beautifully, and the clarity and sharpness of the colours was something that I did not expect to see," says Zarah.

"It is a pleasure for Christie to play a part in enabling such a stunning creative project," says James Belso, senior sales manager, Christie. "With the advancements in projection technology, artists are able to think bigger and brighter when designing initial concepts for digital artwork. Our partnership with the Barbican is all about empowering artists with the latest audio visual technologies and allowing them to create compelling and impactful experiences that draw in audiences."

The Lumen Prize, described by The Guardian as 'the world's pre-eminent digital art prize' celebrates the best in digital art, and the People's Choice Award is determined by a public vote of the Lumen Long List.  The Christie HS Series 1DLP® laser phosphor projector provides 20,000 hours of low-cost lampless operation, and features Christie BoldColor technology for the most life-like images and natural colour reproduction possible with laser phosphor illumination.
