Vortice enhances spectacular shows with laser projection

December 03, 2019

LISBONVortice Dance Company, one of Portugal's most prestigious dance companies, has recently acquired eight Christie® HS Series laser projectors to enhance its shows all over the world with stunning digital art.

Vortice Dance Company was founded by directors and choreographers Cláudia Martins and Rafael Carriço in 2001 and has since gone on to win many international awards, with a special mention from the 2001 UNESCO Grand Prix of Choreography in Helsinki. The company has garnered an enviable reputation for the technical prowess of its dancers and for its exquisite use of technology in productions that combine choreography and multimedia.

Vortice Dance Company wanted to add a wow factor to its performances with an extra degree of spectacle and video projection seemed like the natural choice. "Projection technology allows them to enhance their choreographies with eye-catching audiovisuals that are sure to captivate audiences," said Luis Carmo, account manager of Total AV, the Christie partner that supplied the equipment.

The company used eight Christie D20WU-HS 1DLP® 20,000 lumen laser projectors, featuring WUXGA resolution and BoldColor Technology for enhanced color accuracy. Weighing in at 42 kg (93 pounds), it offers an unmatched lumen-to-weight ratio, making it a viable alternative to 3DLP® projectors with similar brightness. Rafael Carriço, from Vortice Dance Company, explained why they opted for Christie: "We were looking for very bright projectors and the truth is that the cost effectiveness of this model was the best we were able to find in the market. For us, the quality of the image and the brightness are the most important factors, and Christie projectors tick those boxes and then some."

He added, "We also took into account the long operational lifetime and the low cost of ownership that the laser technology of these projectors gives us. And to top it all, you have the guaranteed technical back-up and support from Christie's distributor in Portugal, Total AV - a true five-star company, highly professional and always ready to give us the benefit of their technical know-how."

Vortice Dance Company is already planning to use the Christie projectors to project animations, holographic and 3D content - including projection mapping - in various upcoming dance shows, operas and open-air productions.

In fact, the company has already used the projectors in its most recent production, Artificial Intelligence, which premiered at the Cistermúsica Festival in Alcobaça, Portugal. For this show, Vortice Dance Company created a spectacular 25-meter projection mapped show on the façade of the Alcobaça Monastery, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and chosen as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
