Kitchener’s west wing – from refurbished warehouse to environmentally friendly office

Kitchener’s West Wing

When Christie needed to expand its Kitchener facility, it reconstructed a 3,300 square meter (35,000 square foot) portion of the building, informally known as the west wing, to a beautiful and highly functional office environment.

Construction of the west wing incorporated building materials and techniques in alignment with LEED Gold methods.

The following energy-smart, environmentally friendly and sustainable initiatives were introduced in the renovation:

  • A Lutron lighting control system has “daylight harvesting” technology which automatically adjusts lighting levels as the natural light changes, is dimmable and has vacancy sensors that know when the space is not being used.

  • The new space uses environmentally friendly and recycled materials including wood, GreenGuard certified carpeting and natural stone.

  • Low VOC (volatile organic compound) paint was used, which reduces harmful toxins being released into the air.

  • Wall and ceiling color were designed to enhance the natural daylight provided by large Low-E Argon windows.

  • The introduction of high-efficiency boilers, fluorescent lighting, increased insulation and rooftop units have made the west wing 30-40% more energy efficient than the rest of the Kitchener facility.

  • 80-90% of demolition materials were diverted from the landfill site and recycled.

  • The west wing was designed intentionally to preserve our natural green space while providing a relaxing, collaborative environment.
