Christie powers projection mapping on ice in Mexico

Mexico City- Christie®, world leader in creating and sharing the best visual and audio experiences, is pleased to announce that Altea Corp has installed eight HS Series laser phosphor projectors and Christie Pandoras Box media servers in the Mundo E shopping mall in Mexico City, providing a permanent mapping of the mall’s ice rink, making it the only projection of this kind in the country.
Covering an area of 34.75 x 17.26 metres, the projection mapping begins on the surface of the ice rink every day from 7 p.m. Recórcholis, as the installation has been named, is designed to make an impact on the public using customized contents with seasonal themes like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and so on.
To deliver the themed audio-visual content, Altea Corp, a company specializing in the development and content of multimedia events and installations, has installed eight Christie D13WU-HS projectors, which operate in tandem and are mounted in the four corners of the rink at a height of around 15 metres. Each pair of projectors covers the opposite quarter of the rink. They are ultra-quiet projectors, using 1DLP® technology with 13,500 ISO lumens and WUXGA resolution.
“One of the main reasons why we chose these particular Christie projectors is the long lamp life,” explained Carlos Márquez, director of projection at Altea Corp. Christie HS Series projectors provide 20,000 hours of lamp life at a low cost of operation.
“The size and weight were also decisive factors in making our choice, especially since they are mounted on partition walls. We were also convinced by the high contrast ratio (i.e., deeper blacks) and, in addition, thanks to the built-in BoldColor technology, the colours are much more intense than many of the other projectors we had used before,” added Márquez.
The blending and warping functions are crucial in matching the images precisely on the large surface area used for the projection. “Owing to the complex throw and the fact that there was only one possible position for the projectors, the crossing projections called for a lot of work with blending and warping,” noted Márquez. “Despite the ambient light and the complex throw, the end result is excellent. I am pleased that these projectors gave us everything we were looking for and more, and I’d have absolutely no qualms about recommending them for this kind of permanent project.”
To run the projection mapping at Mundo E, Altea Corp installed a Christie Pandoras Box Quad Player and a Christie Pandoras Box Manager. “These media servers allow us to control and automate all the projections, offering incredible creativity and flexibility,” said Márquez.
Located in the north of Mexico City, and with 30 million visitors per year, Mundo E is one of the world’s busiest shopping malls. Recently revamped with a modern, new facelift, the mall boasts over 300 stores and entertainment places.
